Kona, Hawaii 12-23 June 1999
General trip notes:
Vacation for Caroline and me only. We spent three days in south Big Island at the Hobbit House (www.aloha.net/~hobbit/bnb) bed & breakfast (Bill/Darlene Whaling) in Naalehu, HI. Very nice - and also remote - required our 4wd Blazer to get there. Also used the 4wd for jeeping on the lava fields and in search of the green sand beach. The rest of the trip we stayed at Kona Billfisher in Kona, HI, as part of an RCI trade. Reasonable accomodations, but digital phone system :(. Scuba diving for 5 days with Eco-Adventures (www.eco-adventure.com) - a cattle boat (20 divers average) but with good service. Then we went horseback riding in the north at Waipi'o Valley - very beautiful and relaxing - with Waipi'o Na'alapa Stables. Plane trips were long - about 12 hours - almost missed the connection TO Kona from LAX. Remote beach at Kona Coast State Park was nice, also larger public beach north off the highway.

Notes:
Weight not quite enough, shorty and skin comfortable with occasionally slight coolness. Yellow trumpetfish, longnose butterfly fish, snowflake moray eel, fourspot butterfly fish, moorish idol, yellow tang, lobster, blue and yellow and striped and fried egg and blue-black nudibranches, lots of smaller corals, urchin shrimp hiding among the black urchin's spines, several crown-of- thorns - like a 12-18 inch green (red with light) starfish with many suckers like feet, touched and held small octopus (baseball sized head, 1 foot tentacles) - held in hand - didn't bite - felt it's suckers on my skin - head was soft and slimy. 1 foot waves, moderate surge. Dive guide was "OK" - not really paying attention. 21 divers, 7 staff - crowded but smoothly run. Using new prescription mask - slightly better focus on gauges, but fit wasn't too good - clearing mask - saltwater stinging eyes. Profile 20@60(G)/44@40(R)

Notes:
Same boat and trip as #46. Weight was good. Took Bronica camera and shot a roll. 1 foot waves, moderate surge. Sea Turtle, more crown-of-thorns, spotted pufferfish, reticulated cowry, large triton's trumpet, spanish dancer, encrusting red sponge, black spiny urchin, slate pencil urchin, black and white urchin (very pretty), small brownish urchins, pincushion urchin, cauliflower coral, antler coral, rice coral, finger coral, lobe coral, plate coral (looks sort of like a christmas tree). Watched corals reproducing - spraying a puff of sperm into the water - looked like someone blowing a puff of smoke. Fascinating watching thousands of suckers on crown-of-thorns as it moves across the coral. Chimney is lava tube - dive guide didn't let us swim up it - other groups did, tho. Profile 20@60(D with SI)/39@40(V). Actual profile was more like 45' for 50 minutes (from Caroline's dive puter) putting us at PG "U" using the wheel.

Notes:
Night dive with manta rays - we all gathered on the bottom to show our divelights up in a circle. Manta rays (6 to 8 foot) swam around above us, skimming right over - good pictures. This was the night dive for Caroline's Advanced Certification. Added 2 pounds of weight for the shallow dive. 4 foot giant moray eel, sea cucumbers. About halfway through the dive my mask started to flood slowly, and continued to - clearing didn't help much - maybe the new lenses? Caroline got her octopus regulator stuck between two rocks - I had to pry the rocks apart to get it out. We were holding on to the bottom to maintain stability for shining lights up to attract the manta rays - moderate to heavy surge made it difficult.

Same boat as #46-49. Boat piloted by Captain Ronnie. Used prescription mask - still flooding - so I switched to old mask (I took it on the dive with me) underwater. This dive was Caroline's Peak Performance Buoyancy dive for Advanced Certification - swimming thru hula hoops. Boat had 20 divers - smooth but crowded. 3 foot waves, mild surge. Profile 9@50(B)/10@60(G)/36@35(O). Several eels - whitemouth, giant moray, yellow margin moray, spotted snake eel (swimming along bottom). SHARK!!! White tip reef shark - 6 foot - quiet, resting in cavern, two white lobes - one on each side of mouth.

Notes:
Same trip as #50. Using "old" mask - no problems. Several nudibranches, eels, sea cucumbers, crown-of-thorns, and several SEA TURTLES! from 1½ to 4 foot lengths - resting on the bottom and swimming. Using dive light - lots of little critters and fish in holes. 3 foot waves, mild to moderate surge. Profile SI(C)/10@40(G)/20@50(O)/24@30(S). Slightly positive buoyancy for last ten minutes of dive. Comment on EcoAdventures: well run cattle boat, smoothly processing divers, excellent service (they keep your suits and equipment and wash it for you for the next day, etc.) Great - if you like cattle boats. They also push PADI (etc) training a bit too much.

Same trip as #52. Caroline and Wayne Batzer's 12-year-old daughter Darien went off to do Advanced Cerficiation navigation, so I buddied with Wayne (wbatzer@prodigy.net). Several swim- throughs - "Suck Em Up" with positive surge - sucks you thru, also a beautiful arch rectangle 8 feet high and 25 feet across - looked like a framed picture with fish in it. 1-2 foot waves, mild surge. Wayne is from Oahu. Nudibranches, scorpion fish, several eels, and another 4 foot SHARK!!
